4 Romantic Hotel Stays in Ireland That Feel Like a Fairytale
From historic castles and grand country estates to lakeside retreats, Ireland is home to some seriously dreamy places to stay. If you’re looking for a romantic weekend away, a special occasion stay or simply an excuse to treat yourself, these four luxury hotels belong on your Irish travel wishlist.
Ireland doesn’t exactly lack beautiful hotels, but there are some stays where the hotel itself becomes part of the trip. Think roaring fires, sprawling estates, elegant bedrooms, afternoon tea, spa days and waking up surrounded by some of Ireland’s most beautiful scenery.
Here are four luxury Irish stays I’d have on my wishlist…
1. Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate, Co. Galway
Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate
If you’re looking for old world Irish elegance with a touch of glamour, Glenlo Abbey is hard to beat.
Set on a 138-acre estate on the shores of Lough Corrib, just outside Galway City, this five star hotel combines historic character with luxurious modern accommodation. The estate dates back to the 18th century and the hotel is surrounded by gardens, woodland and beautiful lakeside scenery, perfect for your morning stroll.
There are plenty of room options, from classic rooms to impressive suites, with some overlooking the gardens or Lough Corrib.
ย The Experience ๐๏ธ
One of the biggest draws has to be The Pullman Restaurant, where you can dine inside two beautifully restored former Orient Express carriages. The restaurant currently holds a Michelin Star, making dinner here a pretty memorable part of the stay.
There’s also afternoon tea, golf, estate activities , historic cinema and the Glo Spa, so you could easily spend an entire weekend enjoying the estate without needing to go anywhere.
Perfect for: Romantic weekends, birthdays, anniversaries, foodies and anyone who loves historic properties.
2. The Lodge at Ashford Castle, Co. Mayo
The Lodge at Ashford Castle
For something a little more relaxed and affordable but still seriously luxurious, The Lodge at Ashford Castle is a beautiful option.
Originally built in 1865 as a residence for the estate manager, The Lodge sits within the spectacular Ashford Estate overlooking Lough Corrib. Today, it combines country house charm with contemporary interiors and is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection.
The rooms are individually designed, with elegant interiors, luxury toiletries, Egyptian cotton bedding and, in some rooms, private Juliet balconies.
The Experience ๐๏ธ
The location is one of the biggest reasons to stay here. The Lodge is surrounded by the 350-acre Ashford Estate, giving guests access to beautiful woodland, lakeside scenery and castle grounds. There are also activities including falconry, fishing and other outdoor experiences. We went with an afternoon tea in the castle which was gorgeous.
And if you’re visiting the area, you can explore Cong, Connemara and the wider west of Ireland.
Perfect for: Couples, romantic escapes, countryside getaways and anyone who wants luxury without the formality of a traditional castle hotel.
3. Lough Eske Castle, Co. Donegal
Lough Eske Castle
If your idea of a luxury Irish getaway involves a castle, mountains and a spa, Lough Eske Castle should definitely be on your list.
Located just outside Donegal Town, the castle sits on the shores of Lough Eske with the Blue Stack Mountains providing a spectacular backdrop. The estate covers around 43 acres of woodland.
The property blends historic castle architecture with contemporary luxury, with rooms and suites ranging from classic castle accommodation to the newer Donegal Suites.
The Experience ๐๏ธ
This is one for a proper escape from everyday life.
Spend the morning exploring the estate, maybe take a complimentary bike on this adventure, head to the spa for some relaxation and finish the evening with dinner before retreating to your room.
The setting is particularly beautiful if you love the more dramatic side of Ireland woodland, mountains, lakes and that wild Donegal landscape.
Perfect for: Spa weekends, romantic getaways, special occasions and anyone who wants to escape into the countryside.
4. Mount Juliet Estate, Co. Kilkenny
Mount Juliet Estate, Autograph Collection
And finally, Mount Juliet Estate in County Kilkenny.
Set across an incredible 500-acre estate, Mount Juliet combines the grandeur of an historic country house with modern luxury. The estate’s Manor dates back to the 18th century and has recently undergone a major restoration, reopening in March 2026.
The accommodation is split between The Manor and Hunter’s Yard, giving you two quite different experiences. The Manor is the one I’d choose if you’re after that classic, romantic Irish country house feel.
The Experience ๐๏ธ
The estate is much more than somewhere to sleep. You can explore the grounds, play golf, enjoy afternoon tea, dine at The Lady Helen, have drinks in the 1757 Bar or simply spend the day enjoying the surroundings.
The newly restored Manor has 31 individually designed bedrooms, while the wider estate has 124 rooms and suites.
Perfect for: Romantic weekends, weddings, milestone birthdays, golf trips and luxury countryside escapes.
Which one would you choose?
Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for somewhere beautiful to escape to, these hotels show just how much luxury Ireland has to offer without leaving the island.
From lakeside views at Glenlo Abbey and The Lodge at Ashford Castle to the mountains surrounding Lough Eske and the sprawling grounds of Mount Juliet, each one offers a completely different experience.
Now all that’s left to decide is which one you’ll check into first…
